I am actually speechless. I have 0 words for this. It goes so far beyond my understanding how a book that romanticizes rape and stalking is by any means considered enjoyable or a good book. The absolute shock on my face when she started falling for him, I’ve never been so outraged. Anyone who enjoyed this needs to seek serious help. How are you gonna defend a man that sa’d her multiple times, joked about her being defenseless, loved how she was scared of him, called her little girl… yeah girl I fear that’s a huge morality issue that needs to be checked out. The fact this has a rating above 3 is actually baffling to me and frankly so unbelievably concerning. Doesn’t even deserve to be rated because I’m disgusted.

I just couldn't anymore after 500 pages I had enough. I'm not sure what content warning I can't handle, I skimmed though stuff that was too much for me to read but overall yeah I can't do it.

My only content warning is offensively bad writing. And, I guess, sexual frustration and general frustration as a result.

I wanted to quit several times and pushed on because I generally don’t DNF books. I had to put it down though. I lost the fight and I now understand on a very personal level the meaning of brain rot.

Let me tell you why this book is BAD.

I came to this booking LOOKING for an abusive relationship. I thought this was going to be a book that would shamelessly illustrate oft overlooked desires of many women, things women aren’t “supposed” to fantasize about but do.

Well, it was certainly shameless, but not in the way you think.

Adeline’s actions, thoughts and desires are RELENTLESSLY and REPEATEDLY described away with “I must be stupid,” “I know I’m stupid,” “there must be something wrong with me,” and to quote, “I need to check myself into a mental hospital if I survive this night.” I can’t count the number of times she describes herself as stupid.

That, my friends, is not how you justify a character’s actions, and I am pulling my hair out over this.

What bothers me is that the subject material resonates with a vast audience, so you should be able to make sense of the characters and the way they are, because clearly they can and DO make sense in the brains of real people.

It’s frankly insulting to have any such “strange” (albeit incredibly common) sexual desire or fantasy written away with explanations like “I’m crazy, I’m stupid, so-on-and-so-forth.” Make the character make sense so that people don’t think she’s stupid or crazy, for fuck’s sake!

It makes it look like the author doesn’t even get her own inner desires, doesn’t understand what she likes, or why. She spends adequate time writing up this very extensive fantasy and her only way of making sense of it is, oh, the woman is stupid.

Not every book is for everyone, and this one just didn’t work for me. The storytelling lacked immersion, and the flow felt choppy, which made it hard to stay engaged. I found myself losing interest rather than being pulled into the world.
