I liked the author’s style of prose. The story flowed at a decent pace throughout (until my issues with the ending).
The main trio were well-developed and all given their own lives that felt very believable. May clearly put her energy into creating fulsome characters that felt real beyond the page. I enjoyed the chapters alternating between characters, and each POV felt distinct.
But I had a lot of disappointment from this book as well.
I detested all of the main characters. Not that they can’t have flaws, but the situations they got into and their actions and constant vitriol against each other was grating. It’s hard to care for a book and the outcomes of the characters when you don’t like them.
And then there’s Isobel and the drama she creates. I like domestic thrillers, but this didn’t give me that thrill. It all felt quite predictable once you knew the character’s secrets. There wasn’t really a twist ending, and it all happened too quickly in the last chapters. There was no room to digest the climax, no room for the protagonists to triumph, and too easy of an evil monologue explaining their whole wild plan.
Plus, an epilogue is dangerous. Too often, they too neatly wrap a bow on everything and give happy endings to everyone in such an unrealistic way.
