Minor: Grief
MMC has PTSD and severe scarring from an attack will a soldier. The scarring and PTSD are main plot points. While the incident happened s before the book the MMC has flash backs with mild to moderate description of the event.cluckieduck's review against another edition

Sometimes a girl doesn’t need a hero to save her. Sometimes she needs the opposite.
I so wanted to like this one - a Beauty & the Beast retelling with a tortured, scarred hero falling for a shunned, take-charge heroine with trust issues - but overall it felt like a whole lot of...nothing. The same conflict between the two, recycled over & over & over. I also felt the tone was decidedly modern. Granted, I don't have much experience reading HR, but this lent to it just feeling a bit off.
Overall, dull & forgettable.

So I listen to audiobooks when I want to get back into reading books from a slump and I am glad I found this book.
Astrid, is not happy that her guardian, Uncle and aunt, are basically selling her sister to a coward and a brute named Beaumont. He is the main reason why Astrid is not married at the moment after causing a scandal that led to her being a spinster. While Astrid falls under the I am not like other girls category where she enjoyed things that were according t society not great for women, I enjoyed her perspective. She was very honest, compassionate and understanding. She loved her sister and was willing to go to great lengths, like marrying a brute to ensure that her sister is safe.
The duke, also known as brute aka, Thane was not my cup of tea. I have come to realize over the years that I do not enjoy when men whine and this book is a show of that. I understood why of course. He had low self-esteem and barely ever acknowledged his feelings. He did make up for his behaviour with good sex and a great sense of humour. I liked that he enjoyed dotting on his wife and indulging her. I like that he made a change. It seemed like for every step forward he made forward with his wife, he took two back. It infuriated me as much as it did Astrid and she took it within stride. She was not willing to give him up.
There was a lot of women's liberation talk (that made me roll my eyes because it felt like feminism was being shoved down my throat) but honestly, this book needs you to suspend your belief and I enjoyed it.
I wish, there were more words to show his progress in accepting love because while it is easy to say that he accepted her love, I don't think it was a light-switch kind of thing. It would have made it more meaningful to show it rather than the numerous hot scenes.
