This was enjoyable and quick to read, combining one of my all-time favourite settings, North American summer camp, and a new favourite trope, guides/scouts. I loved the way that each issue was themed with a Lumberjanes badge as it really brought that trope to the fore.

I was a big fan of the art style and design of this book, how cohesive these two were. The illustration is quite sketchy and this is perfectly mirrored in the lettering and the way the border panels are drawn. The sketchiness is also a great match for the rustic, outdoorsy feel of the story.

The five MCs are all pretty distinct which is a plus. Obviously the first instalment is going to be pretty surface-level, so I’m hoping that we start to get depth next volume. There was an attempt at some depth with Molly but it wasn’t super effective as the character conflict was introduced and then resolved within a few pages.

I do wish this volume had had more of a contained story arc - the main plot is resolved, but the “mystery” ended up being a bit anticlimactic as it was just set-up for the next book. However, I am definitely intrigued enough to pick up the second volume. The mystery aspect kind of gives me Gravity Falls vibes!

Rep: of the five MCs, two are sapphic and one is trans. Ethnicities unclear, I think three are white and two are characters of colour, and of those two one might be East Asian.

I read this a few years ago and retained very few memories about it. Now that I’ve re-read it to read the entire series, I can definitely remember why it appealed to me so much when I was younger.

I feel like it’s got a start that’s just enough to pull you in and get you interested in the story, with characters well written enough to keep my attention. While each character is a little trope-y, I don’t mind it and think they hold up pretty well on their own. I also really enjoyed the twist on Girl Scouts, it just appealed to me.

The art style feels very unique and really lends to the tone/setting of the book. Though there were a couple instances actions/scenes were hard to read it was never so much that it ruined the story. Just a matter of the artwork not conveying action in a way I could understand.

While I think it’s a pretty good start to the series, I did also feel pretty lost. Which is something I remember feeling when I first read the book. I trust that it will be revealed as the story goes on, but I can understand why it might put some people off from the series.
