This book isn't about answers - there can't be any easy answers, because Bronson interviewed dozens of people, trying to find a common path to living a life where your job isn't something you dread, but there isn't one. Everybody does things a little differerntly to get there. Bronson says that you can't uncover your passion through effort (searching for it won't mean that you find it), and, no matter what you're doing now, you're preparing yourself for whatever your passion is.

I read this book "for a friend" since this question has never crossed my mind! ;) Overall a good read with interesting stories from people he's interviewed and anecdotes from Bronson's own life and career decisions. I liked how stories were organized by uncertainties that are widely held (e.g. beholden to money, family obligations, etc.). I didn't find any of the stories to have "the answer" but that is the point. Life's major decisions can't be distilled into a step 1-2-3 formula. Every journey is different. And this book gives you license to ask the question and explore the answer.

Didn't enjoy the writing style and was sadly uninspired by the stories.

A friend recommended this book and I wanted to love it. Interesting stories, no real point. What should you do with your life? Whatever you want, but go do it. Don’t let the trappings of other people’s expectations and the reality of your life stop you.

A good book, very anecdotal, but if you pay attention you can get the questions that you should go away thinking about. Bronson tries not to say "this is what you should do, this is what you shouldn't do." Instead he tells the story of people who have also attempted to answere the question. Bronson doesn't believe that you should wait for some mystical "calling" so his book can't help you find yours. But, again, it's a good book to get you thinking.

Meh. A few useful tidbits but not much. Wasn't worth getting to the end.

Interesting book, and I like Po Bronson's writing style. The book doesn't provide a specific plan, or prescription. He never tries to tell you what you should do with your life. Instead he offers a collection of stories about other people that have asked, and often answered, the same question. Through the stories you see that it's natural to question your path through life, and to see that there's many ways of answering the question.

Three stars.

This book is like having a bunch of conversations with people about what they've done with their lives, and why, without all the inconvenient interpersonal interactions and travelling about. Well worth reading if you are pondering That Sort of Thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it bit by bit and digested it. this book is not some didactic text on how to figure out what to do with your life, or clever little tests and quizzes to help you figure out--it's a loose collection of stories of people who are in various stages of figuring out what to do with their lives. There's old and young, many different ethnicities and social classes, in many different fields. the stories are fascinating and rarely disappoint, and Bronson's open and honest narration strikes the right balance, avoiding sappiness while being so open and honest, so PERSONAL. I think it's worth a reread sooner or later--there were so many points in the narration where I felt an idea or truth tickling at the back of my mind. The beauty of the book is that they are there to subtly impress, instead of beat you over the head. I marked plenty of pages as important to reread. I do recommend this for anyone who enjoys reading and learning about other people from all walks of life, as well as to those who would like some ideas and encouragement on the walk to their job/calling/purpose.

This collection of interviews got pretty repetitive but generally it was interesting to see people nurse an intuition and then take a leap- that's inspiration enough. The author's style and tendency to insert himself into other people's stories irked me.
