I love a thriller / murder mystery but it's so rare to find one whose writing style I actually enjoy, but I loved the way this book was written! I'm always a big fan of a very purposeful shift in narrator, and I loved how getting in different characters' heads showed a new angle on the situation. I think maybe this would be a five star if each voice were just a bit more distinct in style, but that's really my only critique of the writing style! I thought this was beautifully written, and I absolutely ate it up. A lot of ambitious style choices were made and generally I thought they really paid off. Fast-paced, engaging, with an interesting plot and style. would recommend!!

Ending the story inside the dad's head as he has dementia... genius. As soon as she pulled out that jewelry box I was screaming !!

Thank you, Random House, for the gifted copy of All That is Mine I Carry With Me
{partner}

Genre: Mystery
Format: šŸ“–
Pub Date: 3.7.2023
Star Rating: ā˜†ā˜†ā˜†.5

ā€œIn small letters, now a little blurry, it read Omnia mea mecum porto, Latin for ā€œAll that is mine I carry with me.ā€

First, I can say, without a doubt, that Dan Larkin (the husband) is a complete scum bag. Iā€™ve seen a few reviews where people said they teetered back on forth on believing he didnā€™t kill his wife, Jane, or thinking he absolutely did. I never changed my feelings. Dan was a horrible human being and deserved way more than he got.

All That is Mine I Carry with Me (ATIMICWM) is divided into four ā€œbooks" and,  in my opinion, it's important to recognize them as books (not parts), as each new section truly felt like I picked up a different book. The formats and perspectives are all different. It's a unique concept, but unfortunately, the structure didnā€™t do much for me.

Books 2 and 4 were, by far, my favorite. Book 2 had me completely captivated as it added such a unique perspective to the book, and it was one that I didnā€™t anticipate having a chance to hear. While the end of book 1 left me a little bored, book 2 brought me right back into the story. The only criticism I have is there are no quotation marks from that point on (you know how I feel about this).

Then we head into Book 3, and suddenly, Iā€™m starting to doubt what I read in Book 2 as the truth. Was it just a made-up piece of fiction, or was it the truth behind the story? Will we ever really know? It added the perfect air of mystery to ATIMICWM.

šŸ“– Ideal book for a book club
āœØ Unique book structure
šŸ’Æ Character development
šŸ¤Æ Book 2 was my favorite

āŒ rape and graphic death

I recommend reading All That is Mine I Carry With Me if you enjoy a slow-burn mystery and outstanding character development.

 All That Is Mine I Carry With Me is a family drama with a crucial mystery/crime element. When Miranda is 10 she arrives home from school and her mother is missing. Despite a police investigation and their suspicions of her husbandā€™s involvement Jane is not found and no charges could be laid. Miranda and her two brothers grow up being raised Dan, the chief suspect in their motherā€™s likely murder. When they are all adults Janeā€™s body is finally discovered. The story unfolded in four books, each from the perspective of a different character, including that of Jane herself. Given her section was second in the book, the mystery of whether she had disappeared or was dead, and who, if anyone, was responsible did not remain a mystery for long. I liked seeing how the children were impacted growing up. Miranda latching on to a mother substitute was heartbreaking, as was witnessing people avoiding the children because of the suspicions about Dan. Middle child Jeffā€™s teenage rebellion involving sex, alcohol and drugs was likely another consequence of the complicated family dynamics. I would have loved to have seen more of their childhoods play out more directly. The highpoint of the story for me was the discovery of Janeā€™s body, the police decision about whether or not to lay charges, and the family divisions over what legal steps they wanted to take. I also enjoyed the courtroom scenes. Done well they make for good drama and Landay, a trained lawyer, knows how to write them well. The final section of this novel features dementia and assisted suicide. I thought the depiction of both living with dementia and caring for the person who does were well done, although I worried that parts of this section could engender sympathy for Dan. For me this was a quick and enjoyable read, rather than one which wowed me or will leave a lasting impression.
