I enjoyed this book....I love the romance building between Jean Claude and Anita Blake.... I feel sorrow for Richard. I sort of want Anita to be with Richard.

So Anita seems to be everyone's savior. After threats from unknown supernatural camps, she ends up promising her protection to two shifter "packs." Basically she promises to protect them and kill if any of their safety is threatened or if any of them get killed. Due to Richard's inability to embrace what he is and his unwillingness to fight and kill, Anita seems to be more of an Alpha then he does. I still can't stand Richard , but something tells me it's probably not the end between those two. The Vampire council also decides to show up and take over J.C. 's house. The council make their lives a living hell, while Anita tries to out maneuver them and come out of there visit alive.

I enjoyed this one but I am not sure why because Anita STILL annoys me. She thinks she is so badass that I want to slap the taste of her mouth. She has a serious Napolean complex. Despite my rants, the story had action and was engaging. I just want Anita to be humbled a little bit (but not by rape or any of that crap that was going on in this book).

Some firestarter is running around town frying folks and Anita is on the case. Plus, the vampire counsel has her boyfriend JC quaking in his boots AND Richard has his hands full with his pack. Anita has so much drama everywhere but give it to the girl, she knows how to get things done!
I don't like Rape, so I am glad the torturers are done feeding on the St. louis pain and getting the hell out of dodge.

I did want Anita to get back with Richard, but she doesn't respect him and talks to him like he is 2yrs old, so that won't work. I don't like that she has power in the pack. Anita is starting to remind me of Sookie with her hands in every supernatural pot around town.

Again, I wish we could give half stars. I want my list of 4 star books to be an elite group, so I would give this one 3.5. Plenty of adventures for Anita in this one. Hamilton handles multiple story lines well, introduces new characters, and keeps things fresh. Her books are about vampires & shape shifters, so there's plenty of violence...but if you're looking at reading vampire books, I assume you can handle that sort of thing. I can see how Butcher might have been influenced by her work. If you enjoy his books, you might go ahead & give these a try.

I kept on thinking I would come back and finish this one but....
I rarely do a DNF but this I'll have to call it as it is. Why? Because when you put a book down at over 60% read and just don't want to come back to it and when you do, you rehash then don't get much further, you realize that it is just not a book (series) for you. Anita was always throwing herself into situations over her head, then things would get really dark, then she would happen upon solving the situation. Her love life was a triangle and in this it becomes a "triad" yet one, Richard, who I loved from previous books, is a total dick. So I put it in the "I'll come back to it" category but I don't think I will. The books are too dark and I don't like the characters much. Usually the stories end up being pretty good but that is just not enough for me.

I don't rate that which I don't finish. The story was pretty interesting but the characters and conflict off putting. It might have been good in the end but the struggle, I just could not do it.

In this books, we meet two members of the vampire council, Padma, Master of Beasts and the Traveler. The Traveler is a scary vampire. He can possess another vampire's body and use it get around. We never actually see his body, I believe it never left Europe. Padma, the Master of Beasts, doesn't appear to be very strong and is mentioned that he is the weakest of all the council members. His son is an ass.

We also meet Nathanial and Asher. I love Nathanial. He is probably one of my favorites of Anita's loves (which doesn't happen in this book). Asher is a little like Richard, but not as bad. He is a pain in the ass and it gets worse throughout the books. I get really tired of his self loathing.

Dolph and Anita are having issues because Dolph doesn't like that Anita is dating Jean-Claude. This is an issue that will grow throughout the books.

Warrick is a very minor character that only appears in this book. I really like him and I wish we could've seen more of him. Without Yvette, I think he would've made a great addition to the Saint Louis vampires.

The retcons start flying here, though they're relatively subtle. Larry plays a fairly minor role. There's a lot of potential still hiding (as of book 10) in Anita's relationship with Asher, and her relationship with the wereleopards is one of the bright spots in the coming novels.
