Short story collections are never easy to rate, but this one is especially frustrating. The majority of these stories are mediocre, but several of the ending ones are great. I thought “The Past and its Dead People”, “Rope’s End”, and “Or the Grasses Grow” were the strongest in the collection, but none of them truly captured the sci-fi crime fiction theme.
“Rope’s End” centers around a crime, but it’s told from the perspective of a criminal and there is no mystery.
“The Past and its Dead People” is a mystery, but they aren’t investigating a crime (and there are no sci-fi elements).
“Or the Grasses Grow” is just a straight sci-fi story with no crimes at all unless you really stretch and count moral crimes.
There are several stories that do fit the genre mashup well, but these are generally the worse stories. I would recommend tracking down a few of the stories, but I was disappointed overall.
