A fabulously written snapshot of a middle school boy and his life. Bonus: Shakespeare is woven through his thoughts and life.

A classic coming of age story so perfectly told that i may have nightmares about the ratty classroom pets, am convinced that Ms. Baker is the world's best teacher, and maybe MAYBE think i should read shakespeare (toads! beetles! bats!!!)
Holling is a lovable main character, remarkable given his rotten father, and his friendships feel so very real.
Schmidt's writing is masterful.

Loved this YA book! I’m hoping my boys will read it and enjoy it as much as I did.
One of my all-time favorite books. Hilarious and emotional at times. Schmidt does a great job helping the reader to understand the characters. The stories are mostly true from his life, but include little twists here and there. Well worth the read!
It's possible that I liked Schmidt's other book, Okay for Now, but it's hard to say. Schmidt captures young voices and struggles beautifully, and the settings (Vietnam-era, in this case) give the books a timeless and nostalgic quality.
Great book! My 9 year old read it as well and loved it!
Super boring, and I told my kid it was okay to abandon it. It felt to me like a combination of Meaningful Topics that didn’t cohere or feel organic or special. Meh.
An excellent read aloud! I put it off for a while because I thought it was going to be along the lines of Henry Huggins or something. )No offense to Henry Huggins.)
We were not expecting the depth of feeling and insight in this book. We had many great discussions and thoughts and observations from it, and will always love brown, light, perfect cream puffs.

Read this one along with G for her 6th grade ELA class and loved every bit of it. Inspiring and sweet.
