This is a wonderful YA book! Clean and sweet and age appropriate. If you love Shakespeare, you will love this book. The teacher/student relationship reminds me of Dead Poets Society, but no darkness, just the wonder.
slow-paced
“When gods die, they die hard. It's not like they fade away, or grow old, or fall asleep. They die in fire and pain, and when they come out of you, they leave your guts burned. It hurts more than anything you can talk about. And maybe worst of all is, you're not sure if there will ever be another god to fill their place. Or if you'd ever want another god to fill their place. You don't want the fire to go out inside you twice.”
I had no idea this was a YA book going in, but it was still pretty good
Read it to present to my school for the Caudill books awards and absolutely LOVED it. Wonderful references to Shakespeare that my students have brought up in class! Great way to show the relevance of Shakespeare's stories and the beauty of his text in a modern (well 1960s) context.

I read this as an adult and sped through it. I loved the political backdrop and the rich details woven into the story, especially given that it’s a slice-of-life/coming-of-age narrative. The literary references were also a unique touch, especially since it’s considered a modern classic. It’s rare to see classics reference other classics in such a meaningful way.
If I could give this book more than 5 stars...I would.
It was cute but I expected more of a conflict or climax. Also i did not buy the middle grader reading and getting so into Shakespeare .
