Great book with a strong main character. An enjoyable read about an 11 year old girl who is sent to live with her aunt in 1930's Key West Florida while her mother stays and works in New Jersey. She encounters interesting people while there and realizes having an extended family is nice.

This was a great, quick read. The cover doesn't give the impression it is historical fiction, but it is. It takes place during the Depression, and has a great spunky main character. I'll be recommending this to kids who are doing historical fiction book reports!

As part of our April book club theme, the theme is to read a novel that received a Newberry Award and a novel that received Honorable Mention for a Newberry. Turtle in Paradise was the novel that received Honorable mention. I felt that maybe the story needed more. I enjoyed the story, it reminded me of the story Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo a bit, I just felt that there is something missing. I enjoyed the characters, Turtle was very mature and poor thing had to grow up before her time and it I did like the way the author connected all the characters together and her overall message that family endures all.

I enjoyed the characters and simplicity of this book. I was also surprised how short it was.

It's the 1930s and work is scarce so when Turtle's mother finds work as a housekeeper for a women who dislikes children Turtle is shipped off to Key West to live with her Aunt and male cousins. There Turtle meets a whole host of eccentric and likable characters, and discovers that Key West might just be where all her dreams come true.

Initially the cover and the description on the back didn't really interest me, but then this audio edition was recommended to be by another librarian I know so I gave it try. It's definitely worth reading/listening to. Turtle's thoughts on life are hilarious as are the exploits of the "Diaper Gang." Although I really should have expected that from the author of [b:Babymouse: Queen of the World!|476909|Babymouse Queen of the World! |Jennifer L. It's a great way to introduce kids to a time period and part of the country they might not be familiar with, and they'll be learning without even realizing it. The story is based partially on the author's relatives, and an author's note at the end explains further.

The romantic in me has just one small complaint about the ending I just did not feel like the Slowpoke storyline was resolved for either mother or daughter . . . although perhaps it was supposed to be implied?
