not heterosexual, not pro-gay rights, but a secret, third thing

(okay on a serious note, this is my first time reading baldwin and it was brilliant. his prose - there's an urgency in it. like he's sat in a chair across from you, holding your gaze intensely, and going, "listen. listen to this.")

I'm really glad I've read this now and I'm was very surprised about Giovanni's demise (the cause of it). Obviously all the problematic stuff was ick to read and there could have been a more substantial plot

Beautifully written. I found the narrator, David, absolutely vile, and Giovanni and Hella so charming. The characters all reminded me of elements of people I have known in real life, as they feel very alive. I found parts of it challenging, particularly the intense homophobia (& transphobia?) from David himself towards the other queer people around him.

Oof. Beautifully written but terrible to read- I didn’t understand a lot of the social things that I think were customary at the time so I felt a little lost sometimes when people were interacting with “friends”.  I think my least favorite part is thatt we everyone is described to hate each other and use each other anyway.  As adults this seems a horrible way to live and confusing.
Idk, wasn’t for me. Misogyny and homophobia everywhere

the title simply appealed to me, and the first line got me hooked. the scene of the 60's paris, south of france mixed with the american and italian cultures too, highly speaks to me. and reading the gay scene of the time was extremely interesting as i've been interested in reading about it too in that way.
it honestly broke my heart, giovanni and david broke my heart, some lines that i kept really did, and i will read it again and again gladly. could be made into a proper movie too, i gotta read more by baldwin and how big was my surprise finding out it was one of jim morrison's favourite books...

Astounding. James Baldwin is a true master. His writing style is simple and elegant, and his characters feel real. This book's discussion of masculinity, family, and cultural conflict is profound.
