After reading so many glowing reviews for this book, I think my expectations were a little higher than they should have been going into this. The writing just wasn't it for me. I think it was made worse by actually calling out a natural flow and segues into bits within Farley's stand up routines that I noticed it even more - but there were scenes and characters throughout that came out of nowhere just to lead to one deep thought before never being referenced again. It didn't feel subtle at all, more like disjointed anecdotes. The pacing at the beginning was also really slow and almost had me just giving up because it felt like I would never hit the 50% mark. I was honestly prepared to write some really terrible review and go about my day but Meyer and Farley and their relationship did save this book for me. I loved their friendship and how it morphed into more behind the fake dating ploy. They were so sweet and sexy together and at about the halfway point, these two did hit their stride and I started flying through the book so much faster. The ending was a detraction for me in how fast the conflict comes up and then gets resolved - but I loved the communication between these two and how they handled it. I think it would have worked better if everything hadn't happened in the last three chapters. If I focus on the relationship - it was a pretty cozy read, and some pretty good character growth, out of Farley most especially. Still, this will teach me to keep my expectations a little more in check.

The thing that most impressed me about this book was the author’s ability to write solid stand up bits throughout. The relationship between Farley and Meyer (and Hazel!) is an absolute delight. Would read this again.

well... this was underwhelming.

i'm really conflicted about this book, but i truly don't wanna be a hater today because the author's note really touched me. even if this book wasn't for me, i still want to give the author her flowers because in terms of the topics handled, they were handled really well.

i feel like the writing style just wasn’t for me. the way the dialogue was written was quite weird and felt somewhat impersonal. also, even tho i usually love when books go back and forth in the timeline, this one just didn't do it for me. i just felt quite disconnected from start to finish, which was kinda frustrating because i wanted to love farley and meyer so bad, but i just didn't feel connected to them enough and the plot. also the third-act breakup... literally felt my eye twitching when it happened, but it ended up being resolved better than i was expecting and the ending was actually quite cute.

it's annoying because i wanted to love this SO BAD but i just felt disconnected a lot.
