Absolutely haunting experience of a read. Won’t lie when I say I broke down in public for a moment reading this. This book is so profoundly impactful in exploring mental illness that I really don’t recommend reading unless you’re in the right headspace.
Throughout the book, it can’t be ignored that the author took her own life in 1976. This fact left a deep feeling of dread in me as the book ended with her acceptance of the fact that she had finally, and truly, gone insane just as all doctors around her agree that she is finally healing.

Love stretched between them, as delicate as a piece of gauze. She knew that it wouldn't last, Hatred and resentment and indifference and selfishness would come back like old, faithful friends, and nothing could persuade them that they weren't welcome.
This is a short book but there is so much happening. We, the reader, dive headfirst with Lise Mundus into the terrifying and disorienting world of severe mental illness. Ditlevsen's use of language is as precise and beautiful as ever, but it becomes troublesome to untangle what is 'really' happening.
Having read The Copenhagen Trilogy, it's very clear that Ditlevsen mined her own experience with her mental health struggles and stays in psychiatric hospitals.
