Prachtig verhaal met een interessante point of view en een impressionante vertaling.
"She tried to remember a poem, but they had all vanished, and she searched for them the way a child searches for her pacifier."
This is one of those books that I want to buy for myself and read and re-read. With themes of family, mental illness, and the duty one has to care about not only her children but all the children in the world, Tove Ditlevsen's The Faces should absolutely be a cult classic, if not simply a classic.
Lise is a children's book writer whose husband is unfaithful to an extravagant degree. When she begins hearing voices and seeing faces, she becomes convinced he will leave her and she will never write again. In a moment of despair, she takes sleeping pills and is committed to a hospital where she resigns herself to insanity. After all, it's easy once you get used to it.
Something about Scandinavian literature is so incredibly beautiful and haunting and reminds me of a crisp spring morning. This story has every right to be tender and strange and gorgeous and evidently shows the Ditlevsen's talent. Absolutely wonderful in its discussion of motherhood, family, and career.

Ich hab das Buch in einem durchgelesen, der Schreibstil und die Geschichte haben mich so gefesselt und mir noch besser gefallen als die Kopenhagen-Trilogie.
