reading this right after the bell jar was probably a mistake because it’s lowkey almost the same story, but another review said it best: slow read for such a short book. some interesting themes and ideas throughout that kept me motivated to finish. and i did enjoy the last chapter the most. but yeah, something about it was hard to get through.

A slow read for such a slim book. The exploration of mental illness and how one experiences that internally vs externally captured me. The exploration of the faces theme along with the  protagonist's insecurities also made for some interesting reading but something about this book felt too laboriously constructed for my tastes.

4.5 rounding up. Holy shit. This book has me burning with a million questions, this book is making me feel insane. How much does fighting madness cause us pain? Can the purest peace we are searching for be found only in succumbing to what we are fighting? Does not hold back and does not ease up. Beautiful, electrifying, terrifying.

This novel took threads from the Copenhagen Trilogy and her poems and spun them out to their unhinged max to create a searing, tender portrait of mental illness. I felt like I was getting to see from her eyes in this one.
