For all of its well-known characters like the insipid Oliver, the Artful Dodger and the epitome of anti-semitic characterisation, Fagin, this is not a very good novel. The characters amount to much more than the novel that generated them. I read this aloud to my son over a period of months and it was quite a relief to finish it. There are the wonderful descriptive passages that Dickens is famed for and my son will long remember Mr Grimwig's repeated vow to "eat his head" if he is wrong about something and the menace of Bill Sikes, but the memorable bits are small glimmers in a morass of mediocrity.

this poor child i wished he would get a break the entire time. dickens does this to you, craft something that tugs your heart and put a vulnerable, sympathise-able character in mortal danger until you beg for enough. wicked, witty, fantastic plot structuring, and brilliant composition. loved it.

A nice little re-telling. My mum bought me three of these editions of Dickens books so I can use them for teaching. Which is slightly premature, but oh well. It's a nice little read with extra details in the back.

Not really worth it even for a condensed version as I believe there are better ones out there. But it's good for younger kids to give them an idea of the story. I just can't picture any use outside of a classroom.
