I had a hard time getting through this book in the beginning. I think this is because it mainly does not follow along with the characters I have grown to love, the ones I have journeyed with, watched grow stronger, yes it was about Roland as he once was and those he journeyed with then but it was not the Roland I was accustomed to. The bulk of the book follows not Jake, Eddie, Susannah, Roland as he is or even Oy all of who I root for as their journey brings them closer and closer to the Tower. But if you are to love a character you must accept all of what makes them who they are, you must love the journey they took to become that character and if not love at least respect those who were a part of that journey with them. Just as it was necessary for Roland to tell this story it was necessary to read it to hold on and not wish to give up put the book down and pout that it wasn't moving as fast as I wanted like Cuthbert it seems the waiting was about to drive me insane, but as it hit the point I thought I could bear no more waiting for Roland and his Ka-tet to make their move when I knew or in some cases simply suspect the evil and ill-will going on around them and towards them finally the waiting was done. I am sure as the journey to the tower continues more the past will be revealed and as is necessary when you love a character I will take it for what it is simply another part of them to love.

There's nothing I can really say that hasn't been complained about thoroughly from others but the two ends of this book that didn't involve Roland's past were superb.

Some parts of the book were interesting, but this look into Roland's past just did not work for me. My least favorite book of the series.

Spoilers Ahead:

Spoiler With so much of Roland's past being a mystery in the first three books, I was excited to start the flashback. I kept expecting to read about the Battle of Jericho Hill or the Fall of Gilead. Instead, flashback completely focused on Roland's time in Mejis. The battle of Mejis also seemed quite anticlimactic. There was quite a build-up, but the battle itself didn't live up to the hype. As Roland says about these battles "the actual killing time is short". Overall, I was disappointed. This books just didn't work for me.

At this point, I feel like an idiot for putting Stephen King's books on hold for so many years.

I read this book for the first time when it was published 20 years ago. Really? Where has the time gone? Because it had been so long I only vaguely remembered some of it, so it was almost like I was reading this book for the first time, which is a really good thing.
This fourth book in the series goes back to the days when Roland was only 14. It's quite different from the others because of the love story being a big part of it but it does mix in many other elements so I found it quite enjoyable. King knows how to weave a story and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, even the really nasty ones. How about that witch, Rhea... shudder!
It took me a while to get through the book since about 1/4 into it I went into a reading slump (not the book's fault, it just happened). Once I felt like reading again, it didn't take me too long to get wrapped up in the story and finish the book.
Four more to go!
