So, starting out, I liked this series for the team it put together and the story it was telling. But the past several volumes have been part of the dreaded (for me, anyway) Company!Wide!Crossover!Spectacular! or another, and this one was no different. My problem with mainstream comic publisher is their complete and utter inability to keep a series self-contained, which are the types of stories I am interested in since I don't have a lifetime of comic reading behind me to know (and subsequently) care who half the guest stars are.

emotional tense medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
I'm not sure I'd have enough this more without tandem reading all the other volumes but by the time I got to the last issue of this I was so sick of Tony that (despite knowing how this whole thing ends) I got pissed off at him not dying.
The other members' issues were interesting but despite some good lines/moments this wasn't a standout for the event as a whole.

Cage's section was amazing though and honestly it carries the rating here.

Some nice individual background stories to go with the Civil War event. I don't think they are essential to either the Civil War story or to the New Avengers storyline, but it's fun to see the different choices that the Avengers characters make.

I love the New Avengers but wow this was boring! It's actually individual stories for Cap, Spider-woman, Luke, Sentry and Ironman. Only the Luke one is worth reading, that was cool but otherwise I'd just skip this.

I'm reading this event according to the official Marvel Civil War reading recommendation list as seen on their website here:

https://www.marvel.com/comics/discover/114/civil-war-the-complete-event

I found this to be a very odd collection. Overall, I liked it, but I didn't feel that some of the issues were as strong. This collection is made up of five issues that revolve around different characters, so there isn't a continuous story that easily builds on its own. Luke Cage's story and Jessica Drew's arcs were the best. The others didn't give as much information or relied heavily on the reader having been long-time readers or doing prior research--they weren't as easy to jump into. I like that this collection gives a varied response to the Registration Act, but it was harder for me to get into.

For: fans of superheroes/comics; readers wanting a complex mythos that will unfurl over time; readers wanting a more varied collection of issues.

Possible red flags: characters in peril; violence; betrayal/perceived betrayal; persecution/prejudice.

Every issue of this seemed to go in a different direction, but they were all good and added to the Civil War narrative.

I'm getting a little bored with the heroes get beaten down and out-maneuvered really badly and then have an ace up their sleeve and everything wraps up in one issue, it wasn't awful, just hope they change it up a bit in the future.

2016 review:

2.5 stars

This is a collection of various character centered stories taking place during the Civil War Marvel event. It's very difficult to rate, because all the issues are so different from each other in terms of content and quality.

#21 - Shitty art, everyone looked deformed. Okay story.

#22 - Good story, but the same shitty art.

#23 - A great story and good art.

#24 - Good art, boring story.

#25 - Decent art, confusing story.
