Cute. Loved all the Indian cultural references (karva chauth!) even though the exposition was sometimes annoying.
I do feel like the author tries too hard with some of the language /dialogue, adding in Hindi or Punjabi when it’s not really necessary (& not how it would be used). Or using the English direct translation which sound so dumb (“don’t eat my head”) instead of simply not translating so people can figure it out with context clues.
I still hated the interstitials but laughed at the reveal.
I liked both main characters and the friends group are great — I actually like those books better? I’m still annoyed at Tastes Like Shakkar relationship names (the “bhua” who was actually supposed to be a mami, if she’s married to her mom’s brother), but it was fun to see those characters back.
This is a Twelfth Night retelling & I cannot for the life of me remember that play, so couldn’t tell you how inspired it is.
