Eddie is a war veteran who is alone in the world and feels like his life is meaningless. While working at the local amusement park on his 83rd birthday, he is involved in a tragic accident when he attempts to save a little girl from a falling ride.
The next thing he knows, he is in the afterlife...where he will meet five people who will help him learn the meaning of his life and teach him an important lesson.

Short and simple, but powerful. Some overt references to Christianity; but I don't think it detracted from the story.

“Their was a pier filled with thousands of people, men and women, fathers and mothers and children—so many children—children from the past and the present, children who had not yet been born, side by side, hand in hand, in caps, in short pants, filling the boardwalk and the rides and the wooden platforms, sitting on each other’s shoulders, sitting in each other’a laps. They were there, or would be there, because of the simple, mundane things Eddie had done in his life, the accidents he prevented, the rides he had kept safe, the unnoticed turns he had affected every day.”

Although I am not religious, it was interesting to read another person’s visual description of heaven. The way this story was written (minus the present day and birthday snippets) kind of reminded me of Dantes Divine Comedy which makes sense because they are both walking through hell/heaven yaddah yaddah all that jazz.

It’s interesting to think about how your everyday choices (or you know, choice to burn children alive on military duty I guess) potentially has larger impacts on the world and living creatures existing in it, and I think this author did a decent job at it. I’m glad the people Eddie met weren’t his super close loved ones or people he ever met (besides his wife but that wasn’t cliché).

I thoroughly enjoyed this read! Such a lovely take on heaven and the afterlife! I hope this is what happens when you die and I love how Eddie pays for what he has done but in a way he gives back for his sins. Such a shock ending but a lovely way to tie things up!
