This is the book that the Pirates of the Caribbean movie - of the same name - was inspired by. Gotta love a rollicking tale of pirates, voodoo, magic, history, and romance.

I understand why Ron Gilbert took inspiration from this novel. Absolutely perfect.

I LOVED this book. I'd bought it a while ago. I'm a big fan of Powers. I heard it's going to be the basis of the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. I wasn't a big fan of those, so wanted to read it before the movie messed up my idea of the book.

This is fantasy that takes place in the days of pirates. 1718? I don't remember the exact date. Blackbeard was a major character. I need to read up on Blackbeard to see how factual his character was.

There was good character development. There was really only one main character, but other characters were believable, too.

The plot was cool. Powers has a way of integrating magic into the lives of his characters, while also using the magic in a more epic way. It's quite impressive.

I'd tried reading a book by Patrick O'Brian about a naval captain(?). It was a classic, but the technical stuff bored me. Powers didn't bore me the way he talked about it.

I had been putting off reading this book because now I'm out of books by Powers. LOL

2.5 Stars. This feels like a book I should like, but it didn't click. I see the connections to the Prates of the Caribbean, and that was fun, but not enough to keep me interested.
