An adventurous tale set in the Caribbean in the early 18th century, revolving around a puppeteer and a group of pirates. It's a rather straightforward story, less complex than 'Last Call' for example, but still great fun to read.
Tim Powers knows how to tell a story, and if you add pirates, voodoo, the fountain of youth, sea battles and some romance, it's a great book to read in your holidays!

Ruined by an infuriating failure to attribute agency, personality, or goals to any of the women. Full review: https://fakegeekboy.wordpress.com/2008/02/29/for-the-love-of-god-tim-powers-i-thought-i-could-expect-better-of-you/
Pirates, magic, love, and blood.
I had no idea this book contained any fantasy elements before they were mentioned. Here I was thinking I was reading outside my usual scope. Oh well.
The reader did wonderfully. I could easily recognize the speaker based solely on the character's voice.

I know I wrote a review at one time for this but it appears to have gone missing.
Pirates, voodoo, the caribbean, black magic... stop me if you've heard this story.
But OST is much more than a cobbled together version of a Disney ride. Powers has created a swashbuckling epic, and has enough ideas for any three other novels. There's epic sea battles, drunken sailors, some extremely nasty vilains, and a nightmarish trip to the Fountain of Youth that is worth a read all on its own.
Powers has a fantastic imagination, and the skill to get it all onto the page. I'm in awe of his talent.
