Laurent is actually perfect. This was a mess of politics and romance that I couldn’t stop reading. Very twisty!

SICK ENDING!!!! We got world building! We got battle! Hallelujah, fantasy LIVES in this one now, I would say the character building from book 1 was worth it for that alone.
This book is quite different from the first. It’s still a super slow burn (which I appreciate, especially in regards to the power dynamics). This one focuses more on battles and strategy, but also on the growing understanding between Damen and Laurent. I enjoyed the scenes with the two of them going off on missions most. The ending had me very eager to continue on to the final book.

Again, 3.5 stars. To be honest I enjoyed this one a little less than I did the first. I felt this book was a little too repetitive at parts, the flow was a bit odd sometimes. The parts of the writing I didn't like in the first book were amplified in this one. And I got a bit confused with the politics and the many names thrown at me, which is definitely something that makes you zone out while reading. I think her way of writing is sometimes too suggestive, when discussing think like the place of the event, the politics, the army lineup... I got confused on numerous occasions and couldn't quite make the image in my head, which is a shame.
Despite these things, there is this one constant thing that keeps you going and it's the relationship between Damen and Laurent and the NEED to know what's going to happen next.
I think a lot of the could have been cut down. I probably read about Damen doing duties around camp about 50 times, read about his definite plan of leaving about 100 times, while scenes that could've stretched longer (like the inn, or the first scene at the women's tribe) were left a little not satisfying.
But. The last 4-5 chapters of this book are well worth the wait. A lot of twists and turns and horrifying revelations all made for a satisfying plot and a giant cliffhanger that has been well set up.
So I've got some mixed feelings. Will definitely continue on to the third and last installment and will report from the other side!
