The first part of the trilogy had to rely almost entirely on sexual tension and angst related to the main character's position as a sex slave at the Veretian court. The second part has matured out of that: here the book is enticing because the main character is getting to know one of the cleverest, most accomplished military leaders slash politicians in the realm of fantasy, and is constantly selling him short despite not underestimating him.
The trilogy deserves better, in my opinion, than to be known as 'the controversial series with the sexual slavery and the upsetting involvement of minors'. Especially since sexual slavery is anything but glorified in the books, and - I'm going to call it here despite not having read the third installment yet - the secondary character has been the victim of sexual abuse as a minor and the series is very much not glorifying that either.
Whoever is picking these books up because they are hoping for a bunch of sexy, steamy, naughty scenes wrapped in a thin plot: I'm not sorry to say C.S. Pacat has something better in store for you. Though there is also some - again fairly politely worded - sex.

5/10 - Better, but it’s still disgusting. The political aspect was more interesting but in general, the book is boring even tho it’s fast paced (and yes they’re growing on me, the only reason I read this 2nd book).

Ok, in all seriousness, this book was so good. The twists had me on the edge of my seat. I was so invested. Also, the character/relationship development got me so good bro. Ugh! I've been putting off writing this review because I have so many thoughts, but I fear they're all jumbled in my head, so I'll spare y'all and save the word vomit for my friends(Hi guys! Hate you for recommending me this! ♡ ). I am so scared and excited for what happens in the final book of this series. I'm between wanting to put it off and wanting to binge it right now.

the slow burn was slow burning so well here, you had to physically detach my ebook from my hands in the last two days.
