A frustratingly mixed follow up to Lies of Locke Lamora...Parts of this book, especially the piracy story of the Poison Orchid (love that crew! should I check out more pirate fantasy?) or any of the annoying few early scenes at the Sinspire, are easily 4 stars or higher and worthy successors to the previous book but with new fresh takes on that fun crime vibe, but other parts feel much more like second-rate misunderstood retreadings of the first book more worthy of 2 stars or lower, particularly in the first 200-ish pages were the plot spins its wheels of doing bits without any real purpose or actually going anywhere or how the book needlessly integrates flashback chapters seemingly only because 'well the first book did it'. However, it ends very strong, so I will give the positivity the edge here!

Still wordy but the author keeps you intrigued because you know there’s a plot twist you didn’t think of but Locke Lamora did. This book definitely ended on kind of bummer with the death of Ezri, the fake paintings and Locke (for now) dying but I have hope! Still waiting on Sabbeth and Locke’s real name.

The events in this book take place several years after those detailed in the first book. However, there are numerous flashbacks that fill in how Locke and Jean coped with the aftermath of those events and what they have been doing in the meantime, which then neatly dovetails into their current scheme.

I found this book much more engaging than the first one, which did take me a while to get into. The camaraderie and banter between Locke and Jean is excellent, and really enhances their characterisation. All the supporting characters are also well defined and developed, which leads to a great cast of characters.

The scheme Locke and Jean are undertaking is intricately detailed and has reached a delicate stage when outside influences begin to intrude, necessitating Locke to improvise.

All of this culminates in a highly enjoyable, swashbuckling adventure, packed with action, humour, sadness and heartbreak, ending with a cliffhanger that will leave you eager to read the next instalment in the series.

Heerlijk boek.
