I will never be the same
Locke Lamora takes to the high seas in this action packed sequel and loses not only himself, but me as well!
This book is in a weird spot where I like the book, but I don't think it's a good sequel. The fallout of what happens in the first book is... Somewhat resolved? And then the story moves on with a new heist, a new city, and a new supporting cast. Events and people from the first book are brought up in passing, some like references, others like little Easter eggs, and that's all fine, but there's almost a disconnect from the first book and second.
There's a lot of worldbuilding in this book. Locke and Jean get fleshed out a bit more, Jean seems to take center stage in that regard. It's cool that we're offered a chance to see the world through different lens and layers, but it gets all muddled along the way. There's too much downtime in some spots where the story just drags, some of the dialogue (especially the romantic dialogue) is just bad, and lastly, this book poses a lot of questions and not many of them are answered. I hope Book 3 gives some clarity and builds upon Book 2, because I don't feel like the same was done for Book 1.
That being said, the supporting cast has way more of a presence in this book. Every city and locale you're taken to is delivered with the same amount of care and finesse as Camorr was in the first book. The book is filled with exceptional banter and a lot of memorable moments.
Ultimately, it's a sequel well worth reading, but expectations should be adjusted. This reads more like "An entry in the series" rather than "The sequel in the series".
3/5. The Lies of Locke Lagoon.

Spoiler
The twist with them stealing the paintings, and then finding out they were replicas was incredible in how *practical* it was.Ultimately, it's a sequel well worth reading, but expectations should be adjusted. This reads more like "An entry in the series" rather than "The sequel in the series".
3/5. The Lies of Locke Lagoon.
Too grim, more sad and less funny than the first book.
I enjoyed the first one. I’m all for world building but I just couldn’t stick with this one. Sure I didn’t get very far but it was enough to set up the “MacGuffin” as it were.
Maybe eventually I’ll come back to it.

I MIGHT have given this a 4.5 on the first time read through but on this re-read I realize I was wrwrong. it's as good as book 1 - I can't imagine characters I've rooted harder for, they are really just so great! the amping up of the danger and complexity of the problem they need to solve - the depths of their relationship, the wittiness of the dialog and cleverness of the plot. can I fawn any harder? beauty. chef's kiss. unputdownable (or whatever). this book should be read by all!
the pacing is weird. I was recommended this book as the sequel where they are on a boat they're on a boat only after the second half and then it wraps up in the last 50 pages. madness. pretty smooth read though.
