This could have been an interesting book but the characters were so stereotypical and the plot jumped around so dramatically, I just couldn't get into it. I feel the book was rushed, and from how many books I see Roberts has written, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the problem -- quantity was obviously put before quality. I was thankful it's a short book because I found it difficult to pick up and finish.
The characters had interesting backgrounds, but their present day counterparts were extremely dull and stereotypical. I'll just talk about what seemed to be the main characters: Cal was okay but Quinn really irked me. She seemed like the too-perfect preppy do-gooder and I don't see how the quiet small-town boy (Cal) thought that's what he wanted in the first woman he's ever loved (it was probably the whole descents-of-past-lovers thing). It just didn't fit. Everything but the sex seemed forced and sugarcoated. And on top of that they somehow fell madly and truly in love then engaged within a month? I like romance as much as the next person but the abrupt shift between the too-perfect couple and the terrorizing demon was just too sudden and really took away from the story.
Not only that, but it was hard to understand what was happening much of the time. The book is in third person which is fine except that it's written in such a way that makes it hard to tell who each paragraph is talking about. I would realize partway through a section that it's actually talking about another character, then I'd go back to read it for that character so it would make some sense. The same goes for the dialogue; having to focus on keeping track of who is talking stole my attention away from the story itself.
All in all, this book read too much like a badly done low budget movie and I didn't care much for the characters. If you told me a ninth grader wrote it, I wouldn't question it. I haven't read any other Nora Roberts books so maybe her other books are better, I just don't think this one hit the mark. Unfortunately, I bought the first two books together and since I hate not reading books I own, I'll read the second book too and hope it's better than the first.
I would not recommend unless you can get it for free and have absolutely nothing else to read.

I was looking for something fantasy-like with a good romance and this hit both, easily. The plot is a little cliche and fast paced for me to give it a perfect score but the overall plot is rather gripping and there are some enjoyable moments. Finished it happy enough to want to read the second book.
Typically I enjoy Nora Roberts when I am in the mood. I listened to this at work and it kept me fairly entertained throughout. The reader was one of my favorite audiobook readers (Phil Gigante) which probably added to my enjoyment of it.
The hero was very likable, and the heroine was smart enough not to know the different between independence and stupidity. Overall I like most of Roberts' trilogies, and this was no exception.

Good beginning book for the trilogy. Loved Quinn's character and really enjoyed the story.
I was all excited about reading a Nora Roberts book after reading The New Yorker's neat June '09 review of her. I don't like romance as a general rule, but she sounds like such a neat person I thought I'd give it a go. The book (one mentioned in the article) started out great...a little scifi fantasy mixed with Stand By Me. Not a hint of romance until page 50. But, alas, somewhere after the first 100 pages I just lost it. Simplistic sentences and a plot I felt I could have finished writing myself. Sorry Nora Roberts fans.
