Fianne is an independent, feisty recluse that gets manipulated and blackmailed into infiltrating her estranged family to do Lady Oonagh’s bidding. It’s unfortunate that one year with Fianne’s grandmother made her do so many bad things. Her influenced decisions had grave consequences which made it hard to be endeared to her. In addition to the amulet that made her more malleable, being around so many people when you’re used to being by yourself can make you question your place. It was so interesting for Fianne to not feel home in the forest but imprisoned. I also didn’t expect Eamonn to be a creep. I think people didn’t like Darragh because he was a simple man but I love that he had her back and always looked out for her. Some readers viewed him as a lackey but I found that Fianne needed someone to love her no matter her faults and would love her through it all. What better person for her than someone who she’s known all of her life. It was nice to see updates on some of our favorite characters from previous books. I thought it was very smart that Liadin was uneasy and cautious towards Fianne. She knew more than anyone that Ciaran didn’t forgive the family, so why would he send his daughter to them? She also has the sight. We’ll never know what she saw but she probably saw some dangerous things. Like how do people expect her to act when her son is about to die? How did Eamonn know it was Fianne and what the plan was?  Finbar was already dying but it would’ve been more symbolic if it was Conor, but he still has a part to play.

I thought it was ingenious of the author to actually have Johnny’s character be a shield/smoking mirror for the real Child of Prophecy. Even more to have Lady Oonagh’s ‘tool’ and own blood be the one to turn back on her and be the one to fulfill the prophecy is a full circle moment to this trilogy. I wonder who the girl in Finbar’s vision when he foresaw Sorcha’s future as it wasn’t Liadin.

My personal opinion of the book is that I liked it well enough. This is a series of sorrow so I didn’t expect a complete happy ending. I felt this book lacked a lot of the lore and storytelling that we got in the first two books. Granted there was story telling but it was Fianne’s own stories rather than those of others. With that being said, there was more magic and physical evidence of that magic in this book as the previous books were more subtle with the gifts.

The pitch sometimes was altered throughout the story.
