We live in a world where it is a crime to create your own career or be a wage slave as you see fit. Of course, our culture is filled with talk about taking charge of your work life, but all of this is aimed at creating good work robots who will punch the clock 60 hours a week until they retire. Most working people also don’t have any choice over their work lives, because of their education, gender, class, immigration status, geographical location, family situation and so on. The constant propaganda about taking control of your work life creates a tension between dreams and reality. Then there are those of us who are politically radicalized and seek a life free of wage slavery and suburban expectations. Some of us somehow manage to find time for our lives without letting wage slavery dominate our existence. Fewer of us manage to incorporate our creative and cultural interests into a “career” that pays the rent. Mickey Z.’s new book is an inspirational look at those who are finding ways to live the creative life without selling their soul to capitalism.
