This was one of the first works I read by de Bodard, which made me immediately want to read everything else they have written. The world-building is great and I loved the prose so much.

Three short stories that share a little bit of the flavour of the novel The House of Shattered Wings.

I've read the novel, so I enjoyed these - but I am not sure they will be satisfactory meals on their own.

Dominion of the Fallen needs to be filmed, with del Toro as the director.

This was a great introduction to the characters in this alternate fanastical world. I am reminded of how much I love Aliette de Bodard's approach to writing conflicted characters and worldbuilding. So magical, complex and sensuous. I can't wait to read [b:The House of Shattered Wings|23601046|The House of Shattered Wings|Aliette de Bodard|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1431963046s/23601046.jpg|43203048].

The novellas and novelettes set in the Dominion of the Fallen universe are grace notes for lovers of Aliette de Bodard's Gothic angel fantasy trilogy. Some serve up tiny slices of additional world-building and atmosphere; some offer an additional perspective on a character from the core trilogy; few really stand alone.

In Morningstar's Shadow is a good place to dip your toe to see if you enjoy the world and the mood it evokes - there are no spoilers here for the core books, and you'll get a sense of what to expect. Don't come expecting fully-fledged characters or story arcs - do enjoy as teasers of what awaits you if you explore further.

Interesting

This was an interesting read. I like de Bodard's style, and it definitely whetted my appetite for House of Shattered Wings

In Morningstar's Shadow is a collection of three short stories set in the Dominion of the Fallen universe, following characters from House Silverspires. It can be downloaded for free from the author's website.

I don't think they stand on their own that well - most of them wouldn't make sense or have any emotional impact if one didn't know the characters already - but I don't think they're that useful if you've already read The House of Shattered Wings either, as almost everything that is in here is something you've already been told or have already guessed from the first book.

Nevertheless, they're still three short stories with the usual beautiful atmosphere of the ruins, which I love so much about this series. It's sad, and yet not overwhelmingly so - it has the exact feeling of a rainy day to me. (And what a coincidence, it just started raining here.)

Of the three, my favorite story was What Has to Be Done, as it's the one that follows the f/f couple from the first book, Selene and Emmanuelle, and showed me a little more about their relationship, of which I wanted more while reading the first book. Paid Debts, while beautifully written and... very human even though its main character is not, felt mostly redundant; and I found The Face of Heaven kind of disappointing, as I hoped it would tell me something about Morningstar that I didn't already know, which didn't happen.
