Read to fulfill the Venezuela prompt of Storygraph Reads the World 2024.
Intense, heavy read. Very powerful and gripping wordcraft and writing style. Hard to read, but not because it was bad, simply because it was intense.

This remind me a lot of [b:American Dirt|45046527|American Dirt|Jeanine Cummins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1559127861l/45046527._SY75_.jpg|69749472], which coincidentally, is also a book I won in a giveaway. both are about women in nations in turmoil, both influenced by family and love and a desperation to survive; the driving force in American Dirt is a mother wanting to save her son, while It Would Be Night in Caracas is about how Adelaida has been shaped by her mother's love, and how, because of the strength she found through that love, that she can continue living even after the loss of her mother. this isn't a page-turning thriller, this isn't a book of suspense, but just a story of resilience and survival in the midst of a nation eating itself alive. because of the setting, it's impossible for this book not to be somewhat political, but the core message of humanity and living and the desire to be free and safe isn't something that can ascribed to any one political belief, because living is a human right that everyone is entitled to. stories like this will always be important and relevant, because we can never forget what has happened and continues to happen, since we continue to repeat history, failing to absorb the lessons that tragedies should teach us.
