This was the first book I've ever read in Spanish, so this influenced my reading a lot. It took me some time to get into it, but this might also be due to getting used to the language. I agree with other readers that there is something slightly off about the pacing of the chapters and the flashbacks. The rather horrifying story did very much grip me by the second half of the book, and I finished it in days. The book definitely makes me want to learn more about Venezuela's history.

i wanted to like this book, i really did. From the beginning the writing was getting onto my nerves, the book often feeling overwritten, with the author’s over reliance on extended metaphors. these overwritten sections were dense, self-indulgent, and didn’t progress the book at all in my opinion.
i also unfortunately felt no connection to the book, the harrowing events detailed having no effect on me. i feel like it’s hard as an author to make a book which focuses on sadness so impersonal, but Sainz Borgo manages to do that.
whether these two problems are because of the translation, i don’t know, but either way they hindered my enjoyment.
overall not really memorable and wouldnt really recommend reading it.
