I rolled my eyes so much I'm pretty sure I pulled a muscle. The world and magic system were promising but GOD the dialogues and characters were terrible.

I freaking love this book so much! The characters are amazing and hilarious. The world building was wonderful. l couldn’t stop laughing at the way stereotypical clichés were used and the author makes fun of them.
I’m can’t wait for the second book to come out because the ending left me speechless.
I did receive an ARC form the author in exchange for a honest review.

This might very well be the worst book I've ever read. There is nothing positive to say about it: it's written entirely to check trope boxes (shadow daddy- check, morally gray- check, enemies to lovers- check) without really ever caring if it makes sense; it's terribly written and paced; the world building is nonsensical and uninteresting; the characters are exact replicates of every other romantasy you've ever read; the romance is not the least bit believable; the smut isn't even memorable! I wrote "criminally average" in my notes regarding the smut. Criminally average. Couldn't even make the sex sexy. I would have DNF'd if not for the fact that I own the very pretty Moonlight SEs of both this and the sequel. I suppose I will now have to hate-read that simply to feel like I didn't completely waste money on those...
DNF at 22%. I couldn’t deal with the insta lust with the enemies to lovers trope.
I really enjoyed the world building in this and the whole concept of a realm to rehabilitate souls was fascinating to me. The cast of characters was also delightful - how could you not love Sam and Lauren and of course Lo and others like Bellina. What I did not like was like Rory was less morally gray and more vigilante and while she seemed competent and super on it in her regular life once she settled into prison she lost her marbles a little bit in a way that felt really disjointed. I also felt so drawn in when the book started and totally disconnected later.
Caius was also a fine love interest. I was dealt frustrated that weren’t actually enemies and Caius was Iusting the moment he set sights on her and when he wasn’t trying to actively avoid her he was still alpha protective mode. They didn’t seem like they would actually have chemistry or anything in common but it’s hit you over the head reiterated that Caius is the hottest person alive so anyone should theoretically insta lust. That all being said I actually had a good time reading this. The slow burn of the actual physical interactions worked. The shadow monsters are delightful. The world was cool. I liked the characters and that it took a little time to develop them. I wish it hadn’t gone off the rails later on. It also was a nice set up for another book.
