Welp, I managed to finish reading this book but it was a real challenge.

Things I liked about this book:
  • A serial killer FMC
  • The grey-scale sight in relation to the fated mates, and how it was lifted when you came into contact with your mate, that was fun and different.
  • The pacing was good enough that I was able to finish reading it, and I really hate to dnf if I can help it.

Things I disliked about this book:
  • The only truly interesting plot point, the FMC being a serial killer, is basically forgotten about in any meaningful way except for when her friends are teasing(?!) her about it. She's just this normal, nice girl, nothing to see here.
  • The characters were very one dimensional and uninteresting.
  • There was basically no plot once Rory got to the prison realm, except for the MC's "falling in love", and even that was unrealistic and childish. Even the fact that she's supposed to be looking for her sister's killer feels pretty low on the priority list at a certain point.
  • Words like  "royals", "angels", and "fae" we're italicized, and every time I read it, I would read them with emphasis by mistake first and would then be annoyed when I realized.
  • Dumb names given to our technology, like essenet. It's the kind of thing I definitely did writing stories in English class in 5th grade. Just silliness that we're supposed to take seriously.
  • The dialogue made the characters, but especially Rory, feel like they're 15 at best. There were lots of tantrums and ridiculousness throughout, and everything was "the MOST", the most beautiful place she's ever seen, the biggest dick she'd ever seen, etc..
  • The writing in general. Everything in this book is simple, surface level and/or childish, from the setting of the prison realm (it's actually awesome!), to the plot, the characters, their feelings, and their dialogue.

I had such high hopes for this book. Ya win some ya lose some, I guess.

4.5 rounded up! This is a mini review because I am behind on...life.

I really enjoyed this fantasy world and the different take it had on Mystics - members of the same family could be different types of Mystics, which made for a much more interesting world. Rory is my favorite type of fantasy FMC, just a lil stabby in the seeking justice type of way! This story felt different than other books I've read (emphasis on books I've read) but still an easy to follow fantasy world. This had all the absolute loathing to love that I enjoy in romantasies, and the ending had me SHOOK. I will definitely be reading book 2!

Yum. Spicy. Serial killer.

Was a really good break from the trope of untrained civilian to badass trained warrior! It was a fast read! Couldn’t put it down! Highly recommend if you want to dip into a bit darker romantasy?

Wasn’t sure about the urban fantasy- but honestly enjoyed it- and I am not one to gravitate towards anything modern/urban. So. That’s something!

Rory watched her sister be murdered and plotted her revenge on the man who did it. She was a beast. I loved her fierce attitude. She didn’t take any crap from anyone.

She gets to sent to prison because of her vigilante murdering instead of being sentenced to hell (which most people assumed would be what happened). She finds the man responsible for her sister’s death or so she thinks.

Caius is the leader of the prison realm. He is against everything he think Rory stands for (murdering) not realizing why she’s doing it. He is loyal, caring, and so protective of his people

I loved the main character! The banter between Rory and Caius had me giggling the entire book. It was my favorite kind of slow burn. I cannot wait to pick up the next book because it was that good.
