That was neither as action driven or as dark as the reviews I read would have led me to expect. A quick read, and I’m definitely continuing on to book two, but I’m honestly unsure of how I feel about the ending. The timing, for good and bad, of what went down had such a small window for things to happen the way that they did. I think I’m willing to accept it however due to how much prophecy and fate play into the plot. The urban fantasy aspect didn’t bother me as much as it could have, but I also wonder if it’s because most of the book took place in a realm without technology. Some of the “twists” I expected, but others I didn’t see coming. I will say I didn’t have any jaw dropping moments of surprise, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the read.

I so wish i had picked this up sooner because i absolutely LOVED IT. Possibly one of my fave fantasy reads of the year. It had me gripped from the very start, I was a little worried at first that i was going to find the magic/fantasy too confusing but It was actually really easy to grasp with the different realms. I loved the concept of the prison, but i also hated it because i knew it would probably end up being a big thing later on in the book. I loved Rory and how strong and determined she was, I loved the group of friends she had outside and inside the prison. Caius, that man, obsessed from the very start. 100% made it to my list of book husbands, his protective behaviour was everything. I adored the side characters in this book, especially Lauren (not just because she obviously has the best name) and sam!

The ending actually ripped my heart out and stomped on it, i had a few ideas on how it was going to go and i couldn't quite work out what would be the better option. I still haven't picked up the second book yet as I'm scared hahah. I defo plan to pick it up soon because i need answers!

This would’ve been a five star read had it not been dragging at the beginning. I considered to DNF it but decided to read until the main plot of the story happened, when she’s imprisoned in the realm for criminals and meets the Umbra King. Finally the pace picked up and I couldn’t put the book down! The MMC is the perfect tortured, foul mouth shadow daddy! They are enemies to lovers, but can’t resist each other since they are fated mates! Other tropes: forced close proximity, touch her and die, one bed & who did this to you? Very explicit and good amount of spicy scenes. The ending is just unexpected and will have you rooting for them and opening the second book in an instant. Available in KU.

Umm so this was really good ❤️‍
