Meh. A novel so focused on its red herrings that it lost the thread by the end, leaving many dangling strings for no real reason. The final chapters are nothing but extremely long exposition, as the characters take positively AGES to spill all their secrets to each other. There’s also a distance in the story that keeps all the characters from being ones the reader cares for. This is necessary for the big twist, but otherwise means that there is no emotional ties to the eventual resolution. My biggest beef comes with the big twist….

This novel falls dangerously close to making its transgender character seem like a bad guy, which is a trope I hate. Obviously within moments the threats are shown to be yet another red herring, but even skirting the edge is icky.

Almost DNF this one.. wish I had. The writing was all over the place, story is very slow and drawn out. 1.5 stars

I was very excited when I saw this book initially. I found it to be very slow. The back cover describes it as “unputdownable,” but I put it down many times. After looking through some other reviews, it seems like other readers found it similarly slow. I think 3 is probably two high, maybe 2.5 ⭐️.
