End of Story

A.J. Finn

3.11 AVERAGE

Nicky Hunter a writer is summoned to a mansion of a infamous crime novelist to tell his life story before his imminent death.
I just didn't care. I didn't like the writing style found it quite confusing. I didn't care about the characters or the story and wasn't even invested for the twist 😴 sorry just wasn't for me.
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins UK  and A J Finn for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After reading Finns Woman in the Window and loving it I had high expectations from this one but it fell flat. I found this so slow and was close to DNFing so many times but I have never not finished a book so I kept on. The last few chapters were great and had the mystery and twists needed but it felt like too late for me to really enjoy the book.

I enjoyed this mystery but like others found it a bit too long and a bit too slow. Probably would have been better to read rather than listen to. As much as some plot points are tied up in a ribbon, I'm left wondering about
Madeline and Freddy's fates and to a lesser extent, whether the last novel gets published.

I wanted to like this book so bad because I enjoyed The Woman in the Window and because this novel promised to be similar to Knives Out, but good Lord, it was SO SLOW. Dragged on well over a hundred pages more than it needed to, and the writing seemed like it was trying to be enigmatic but just wound up to be needlessly confusing.

Listened on audio and this may not be the best way to take in this book. It was unnecessarily long too. It was interesting but I did fast forward through some of it.

-1 Star: Third Act

Finn has an undeniable command of language. His prose and dialogue are haunting, or outright beautiful. However, End of Story is strangled between sporadic pacing and meandering narration. Style cannot surmount lack of function and direction. I can't divine how I feel about the characters either. Some are difficult to distinguish from each other. The self-insert of a (fictional) famous mystery author is smug at best. Sometimes it feels noir until it indulges in sentiment. The tone feels uncertain, and the final twist is going to polarize most, if not all.
