This is the Castles Ever After book everyone recommends. You definitely don't have to read the first two before this one. That said, it's not my favorite and let me tell you why.

This has, without a doubt, the funniest premise of a book I've ever read. A girl is scared of being thrust into the London marriage-mart and invents a fake fiancé. To keep up appearances, she sends letters to Captain Scottish McScottish-Name in army regiment she-just-made-up and rides that high for years until guilt has her killing off her main character. Years later, guess who knocks on the g-d dang door?

It's hysterical. But the hilarity ends around the half-way mark. Our male MC is bitter and angry (for a lot of reasons, some of them better than others) and that spills out into the treatment of our heroine. The lust is absolutely there and there's plenty of fun sexy times but I would have liked it better if the main couple liked each other better earlier on.

Loved the side characters and the PTSD representation (there was very little but I liked what I saw). Would absolutely recommend for people who like historical romances, people who have read the other two Castles Ever After books, fans of Tessa Dare... etc.

This was a verra, verra good book. It was hot, smart and sexy all in one and I had the best time reading it. One of the best romances I’ve read in a while, with just the right amount of slow burn!

I loved the set up, and the introduction with Maddie's letters was really well done! It's funny and it's sweet. Maddie was super interesting:  she worked as an illustrator of insects and there were some funny bits involving lobsters. The male protagonist is a grumpy Scottish dude, but then we learn he has a soft heart. I loved how supportive of each other they were, even though the whole premise of the story starts with the blackmail trope and fake marriage. It was just excellent.

I enjoyed reading about the main characters and thought the romance was developed better than the other books in the series.

Great narration by Carmen.
