I wanted to like this book; the plot and characters had the makings of something very enjoyable. However, the writing felt overwrought and the characters were definitely "woman written by a man", underdeveloped and hollow. The ending also felt very out of left field rather than being the surprising twist that was (I assume) intended.
Moderate: Gaslighting, Blood, Classism, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Car accident, Adult/minor relationship, Mental illness, Death of parent, and Incest

This book was beautiful. I loved it. Anyone who likes Donna Tart's 'The secret History' or any other dark academia themed books will absoloutly adore this. The writing style doesn't drag you across monotonous sentences in an attempt to be beautiful and rather cuts to the chase while also being majestic. It's like you're getting the perfct ratio of all the good things needed when developing a writing style.
I'd say my one criticism is that the whole revelation went past really fast within the final few chapters of the book, which is normal of course but I feel like some things seemed to be built up and then nothing came of it? Like Henry's existence, or the arrest of Fosca. I guess the end was very fast and very passive in terms of things that weren't essentially the killer. That said, I actually quite liked the ending as it left to be open to interpretation which is always quite fun.

I - CLEARLY - expected so much more than what I actually got… this honestly wasn’t that great.

What a fun read! I think I liked it even more than The Silent Patient, which is saying something. I was truly convinced I would not “get got” by a twist ending, I had it figured out. And of course, I was wrong. Impressive writing that keeps you hanging on!
