My problem with this is the same as everyone else’s problem with it. It’s too short! I think it needed a bit more. The world was intriguing but we barely got to see any of it. I wanted more worldbuilding, more about the women of the river, more about how that changed society. I also think that the spookiness could’ve been heightened with a little more descriptive language.

I like the premise of this one a lot; a fake medium who when trapped overnight after a seance, is contacted by a real ghost. I really liked the 'bottle episode' style of this one. I felt stuck in the seminary with the lead and felt some moments of real fear when reading. I really enjoyed the use of silence and freezing as a reaction from the lead, who I was rooting for.

‘What the Dead Know’ is an adult historical fantasy short story about a fake medium having her first real encounter.
I really enjoyed this read. I always predicted I’d like Nghi Vo’s writing and this is the first piece of hers I’ve read and I really liked it. Historical fiction usually isn’t my vibe but I really liked this one. I loved the characters and the setting and I really enjoyed the plot! I’m excited to check out her other works. I’d also like to look into the lore behind water women too because that part really interested me.

"Along the high banks of the Fogg River, a woman returned to the water, dragging a dead body behind her..."
3.75⭐ Horror/Historical Fantasy with a healthy dose of paranormal female vengeance.
This is my first intro into Nghi Vo's writing and I'm very excited to read more of her works. (The Singing Hills Cycle is on my list for this year!)
While I enjoyed this story- it was beautifully written. I still think this is one where I actually wanted more. This was such an eerie and atmospheric world that Vo created but it felt like we only got to scratch the surface. I would have liked to stay with these characters for a little longer.
