there are some very cool and moving passages in some of these, namely a lot about how the writer should use their childhood and their inner experience of feeling. some of this is a little too edgy for me though, and i do think that the emphasis on solitude allows many readers of these letters to lose track of the importance of contact and community with others.

i found the structure of this particular edition to be weird, especially the tens of pages of historical details at the end of the book but referencing each letter respectively?? just put this info after their individual letters??

don't ask for any advice from them and don't expect any understanding; but believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it.

I really enjoyed these letters. However, I need to buy my own copy and annotate it. There is so much in so little. I raced through it because of how short it is. Annotating it would force me to slow down and take it all in.

this was a collection of letters between a poet and a man who wants to be a poet, during 1902-1904. Basically a philosophical outlook on life, chasing dreams, the power of poetry, and writing as a reflective practice. A lot of observations about reality and the human experience. I liked it but was a lil boring.

"We have no reason to be mistrustful of our world, for it is not against us. If it holds terrors they are our terrors, if it has its abysses these abysses belong to us, if there are dangers then we must try to love them. And if we only organize our life according to the principle which teaches us always to hold to what is difficult, then what now still appears most foreign will become our most intimate and most reliable experience."

it didn't touch me as profoundly as i had hoped, but it's beautiful nonetheless, and i left my copy much underlined
