This book is VERY verbose. There's a lot setting atmosphere and mood, long descriptions of the castle and it's strange inhabitants. I suspect the action of the story could be told in about twenty pages.
But it's still an interesting read if you enjoy in this kind of thing. To me it was Reminiscent 0f Dickens and Kafka.

This is the first time that I failed to finish a book that wasn't horrible. Truly, Titus Groan was witty and interesting. The problem is that I couldn't read it without falling asleep. Literally, I couldn't read more than five minutes at a time because it would---and I cannot stress this next word enough---literally put me to sleep.
Mervyn Peake not only has an amazing ability to describe things, he has a deep insight into people. This combines to create a book which is endlessly delighful to read. Every character is incredible and a joy to experience. Reminds me of Moby Dick in that way. Perhaps the best fantasy novel ever written.

I know it's supposed to be a classic or something but the only redeeming quality of the book is the world building. Which isn't even that great. It like the thing rationalized as he wrote it there was no clear idea of what the setting is like when you start reading. The book literally starts like you are in a fog, then becomes clearer as it progresses. Not to great effect either.
All of this was fine ultimately. The bigger problem was the plot, or lack there of, which reared it's ugly head from time to time to remind you how, annoying and ultimately useless it was.
The biggest problem was the characters. They were all either idiots, autistic, or sociopathic. None of which was pleasant, relatable, interesting, or even humor. The characters we so bad in fact that the book became unbearable and I had to put the thing down.
In a book that is intended to be 100 percent character driven you would think there would be at least one someone likeable or marginally relateable character. But it is not to be. I thought steerpike would be the one that would carry the action as a semi-likeable, semi-relatable character. But he, just like the rest of the book rationalizes over time and ends up being a bit of all three of the tropes in the book, idiot, autist, and sociopath.
Not a good book. Don't wast your time

Vibes and world building are 5/5
Characters are 3/5
Plot is 2/5
I’m stubborn so I had to finish this but I probably should have given up
It might give me some good pulls for dnd castles though

I really have no interest in finishing this one. The writing is rich and full of vivid detail, but the story itself is so freaking boring. Cant do it. Wont do it.
