This book absolutely wrecked me. The sister dynamic, Jayne’s insecurities, all of it just hit so close to home it kind of hurt. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and Choi knows how to discuss intense subject matter without it feeling unnecessarily provocative or disrespectful. I highly recommend if you want something that makes you feel something but be ready to cry.

I knew this book was emotional but whew! Very emotional, complicated characters, and family secrets. I never imagined sisters interacting like Jayne and June do. Jayne’s self destruction sexually and physically made me really sad. I liked the ending, there are still questions at the end but enough questions are answered for me to be happy.

I almost abandoned it because of the cancer theme, but I was pleased to see that it was tackled pretty well.

Beautiful, subtle depiction of family dynamics.

Loved her writing in her previous novels, but it was especially precise in this one.

I wish I liked this book more than I did and that the focus was more on their sibling dynamic than Jayne's personal growth.

I mostly liked it and learned a lot but jayne and june were kind of annoying 😭 especially jayne. sometimes she would just be really overdramatic or sounded like she spent 12 hours a day on 2016 tumblr or smth and not in a good way

I read this book after reading a book that I really, really loved, so I think that kind of skewed my opinion a bit and caused me to have a hard time connecting with the characters at the beginning.

I had a hard time getting into this book and it took me forever to finish… but… I felt connected enough to the story that I ~did~ want to finish it ((not a common occurrence for me! If I’m not feeling a book, I have no problem leaving it and never returning)).

Was this my favorite book of the year? No. However, there were these little moments that kept pulling me in when I was almost ready to abandon it. By the last fourth of the book, I was ~finally~ hooked and connected enough to speed through it. I really did love that final fourth.

Overall, I’d like to revisit this again in the future when I can re-read the beginning with a clearer head and give it the full attention it deserves.
