An inspirational, delicious account of one couple realizing their dream of sailing for a year. I loved this book.
Having only visited a few of the many places Ann and her husband Steve visited on the East Coast of the US and throughout the Caribbean, and having never sailed in my life but spent a lot of time in small metal boats and dingys, I was surprised how at home I felt in these pages. How I yearned to try the recipes at the end of each chapter. How I longed to take my new husband (I started reading this book on the last day of our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic), hop on a sailboat, and turn ourselves south toward the mangos and turquoise waters and wide smiles and "jus' now" time. Although Ann took her journey when I was still a child, I have been profoundly moved by her courage and devotion to learned and enjoying these two years of her life. If I'm ever able to take such a recess, I pray I'll be generous and meticulous and enthusiastic and brave as Ann. In the meantime, I'll be happy to return to An Embarrassment of Mangoes and all its riches.
I just love stories about people who leave life behind..
I struggled with the way she wrote about people who were different from her (and/or people of color) toward the beginning. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed living vicariously through her writing - imagining leaving the grind of normal life for 2 years to travel and have adventures sounds amazing. Hopefully someday I will be able to do something similar.
A fun, easy read especially in the middle of winter.

I remember really reading this book, not sure when I read it, must have been around 2004 based on the stamps in the copy I borrowed from the library which would have been around grade 10... could've been.
I was fascinated with the idea of this book. Who doesn’t want to escape from reality for a few years and just sail away. They actually do it. They planned for 7 years and took a 2 year cruise down to the Caribbean and back. They immersed themselves in local culture and lived a beautiful life in the process. Easily one of my top 10 books. I love how they made friendships with other travelers and learned new skills along the way. One of my favorite passages in the book was when she talked about how she was using a different part of her brain than she did at her job. Not so much spreadsheets and computer work but weather mapping and nautical calculations. What an exhilarating experience.
Loved this book for the places it took me and the contentment it evoked. Did not want it to end. Read this book while sitting outside with a fruity drink.
I really enjoyed this adventure which is a true story! Especially since sailing is something I will never do...but the novel combined my love of the Caribbean with the dream of taking a sabbatical from work to travel. Even better that it is a Canadian couple from Toronto...Excellent writing and a few tempting recipes to try
