My first from Long, and her voice is quite distinct and unforgettable. The rich detail woven thorough the cast of characters is refreshing. The personality she is able to convey so effortlessly and quickly is something to learn from. The MMC and FMC are so fleshed out and real that it completely elevated the story. The side characters were enjoyable and unique as well, and the shifting of perspective between them was an interesting choice. The tensions between our mains was palpable and the build up was achingly satisfying. I enjoy the level of spice she does, not overtly pornographic but still very thorough and sexually charged.
My personal dislike to this book was the pivoting to the supporting cast. The scene with Dot and Pike, and the first scene introducing the Thames palace are examples to me of unnecessary plot. In the same vein, there didn't seem to be any real reason for their inclusion beyond the introduction of our FMC's history. I thought, given the pages they were allotted, their story would be woven into the conclusion.
Overall a brilliant read and I think I need to explore more from this author, I think a different story could well be a 5 star read for me. I found myself feeling almost as though I was reading a play, in the way her storytelling leaned so characterized and near theatrical. And I say that as a major complement. Out of all the HR authors I've tried, Long is by far the most unique voice.
