This book was alright. The story was rather strange and it didn’t really add very much to the original trilogy.
I am very glad that I got it for free on kindle because I don’t think I would have been too happy if I had had to pay for it.
I did however enjoy learning a bit about the spackle and their life before the settlers came, but over all it was not the best short story/prequel I have read.
I think there was a lot of potential, but it just a bit odd.

Just beautiful. Even in these few pages Ness manages to let you get to know the main characters, makes you care for them AND put in a plot twist! All done wonderfully in his stunning writing.

** This is a novella in the Chaos Walking series. Even though events in this book take place long before the beginning of the series, it's best to be read between the second and third book. This review may contain spoilers for previous books in this series. **

Amazing!

It never ceases to amaze me how Patrick Ness can pull at my heartstrings. I loved this novella SO MUCH!! This novella (mostly) doesn't have anything to do with the characters in the rest of the series. There is really only one character in this novella that is present in the rest of the series. This novella is a love story, centered around two new characters. In just 39 pages, Patrick Ness was able to get me so invested in these new characters that there were tears in my eyes before it was over - which I think is amazing considering the length of this novella. I honestly wish I could know more about what happens to these characters - I need to know what happened to them! I'm really glad I read it before Monsters of Men because it gave me a lot of insight into the Spackle.

P.S. This novella is available as a free download from Scrib'd. It also comes included in the newer version of The Ask and The Answer.

"The wide, wide sea" telling some of mistress Coyle backstory basically shows that she is a very complex character and might still make a few difficult but right decisions, it also shows how much of a big fat liar she is.
stop fucking lying

This was a neat little tidbit after all that happened in The Ask and The Answer. I liked getting a different perspective on the world these people live in and especially what happened with the spackle.

I thought this story was really cool and gave neat insight into how the spackle interact with people. I also liked getting a little bit more romance than what we're given in the main story.

However this was just as sad as the main stories have been, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would've liked. The ending was happy but I definitely felt sadder more often than not while reading it.

Basically I liked the background this story offered but I didn't like the way it made me feel.

I was really mad at first and now I’m like I don’t know how I feel I still hate Mistress Coyle and I hope to God we see Declan again

I found this story a tad confusing at first as it featured characters that had not previously been introduced and we were given no context beforehand. Once I managed to understand what was happening and where the story was going, I did end up enjoying it. I thought the idea was interesting and had actually wondered if anything like that might happen. It was also interesting to see the Spackle from a different perspective. All in all I did enjoy this story but at the same time I feel like we could have done without it and thought it was irrelevant to the story.

This is really unfair for me to review because I thought I remembered the Chaos Walking trilogy enough to read this quickly.
Well, I read it quickly, but in all honesty I have completely forgotten everything about this universe! I remembered the concept of noise and... that was all (in relation to this story). I wasn’t even sure if these were new characters or not... I assume they were? I hope I haven’t forgotten that much!
So, I think a refresher of the main series is needed for me to review this properly. Oops!
