Dame Agatha gives us spies and the fate of the world hanging in the balance, all against an exotic middle eastern setting. It is 1950, and a gathering of world leaders has chosen Baghdad for an important peace summit. But rumors of assassination and secret facilities abound, the threat of world anarchy very real. Into this enters Victoria, a young woman who thinks quickly on her feet, with a talent for mimicry and prevarication. As always, the story is populated with many colorful characters from handsome young men, to absent minded archeologists, to ebullient hoteliers, to brilliant secretaries, some being exactly who they first appear, ANF others, not so.
This was a joy to read. Reread actually although I did not remember much from originally reading it decades ago. What I truly reveled in was Christie's creation of setting. Her Baghdad and the other settings in Iraq came to vivid life for me, bringing back many of my own travels in the Middle East and India.
And I just loved this description: "...once archeologists start to dig, they go on digging like mad, and don't stop. Rather like terriers." I will never think of an archeological site again without visions of digging terrier floating across my mind!
ATY 2019 #50-book involving a journey
This was a joy to read. Reread actually although I did not remember much from originally reading it decades ago. What I truly reveled in was Christie's creation of setting. ATY 2019 #50-book involving a journey
I bought this book on a whim. I was looking for "And Then There Were None" but it was sadly out of stock. But not so sad... Agatha is just one of those writers who, regardless of what book you get, she'll never disappoint you.
Starting with... the mendacious Victoria Jones (woman reminded me of my ten year old self). She was so lovable and clever and witty but a bit of an airhead sometimes. Then there was Edward, the handsome stranger who made her just pack up and head to Baghdad on a whim (girl, are you crazy? You make me want to be crazy too!!).
Now, since I don't want to add many spoilers (or any, at that) I shouldn't write any further about the book except the fact the fact that I loved it so much I read it all over again when I finished it the first time. There is suspense at every stage and the sequence of events just invite you turn the pages further and further.
If you desire perfection in paperback... you should get this. Enough said.
