Really engaging. Has some typical YA stuff like the single raised eyebrow and awkward main lead but still very good. Absolutely sucks you in.

If you suspend disbelief, you’ll enjoy this as much as I did. Just a fun, easy read overall and it did manage to surprise me sometimes which I always want in a whodunit story.

Thinking about a dead girl is so much easier than thinking about myself.

I’ve had this book on my radar for years. When my book club picked this book, I was so ready to read this book my students have been raving about for years. Quick take?: I loved this. I devoured it. What a fantastic mystery for young readers.

It’s no secret to anyone that talks to me regularly to know that me picking up a book to read is virtually unheard of these days. Yet, I devoured this book in less than a week, reading half of it one day at the zoo. (I’m so thankful for a summer job that allows me to get paid to read some days). I was completely invested in Pip’s journey and figuring out who really killed Andie and Sal. My money was on the newspaper reporter because he was sketchy af but I was so wrong. I did not see all of the twists and turns and was pleasantly surprised by how this book ended. I figured a young adult mystery wouldn’t stump me that much and this one blew me away. I am so excited to read the sequel and see what else Pip gets involved with. What a strong, female character for our young readers to see. I do think there’s something to be said about Pip’s obsessiveness and how that all-consuming drive can be a negative thing. But overall, I really liked this book and I think it’s a great addition to the young adult mystery world.

*This book was the July 2024 pick for the Read Between the Wines book club.

Based purely on the feelings this book sent me, I’d give A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder a 4/5. It was exhilarating and my sleep cycle has been wrecked listening to the audiobook before bed.

Pip is such an interesting character. She can be summed up with “thinking of a dead girl is easier than thinking of myself.” The lengths she went to solve the murder of Andie Bell were wild
from blackmailing, stakeouts, and breaking into a house to impersonation. It almost became obsessive to Pip, to fill a void in her life when she wasn’t an academically inclined good girl. I like how this side of Pip was introduced right away when her supervising teacher said not to contact the families involved, and in the first chapter she is trapezing to Ravi Singh’s house. However, I had to suspend my belief at times. Pip was risking her life sometimes, going to interviews alone, the lack of oversight on the project, the accusations/confirmation biases and research ethics were thrown out the window.

I thought there would be more Ravi. Amerincanizing the book may have lost some of the cultural context. Fairview clearly didn’t have a fair view of the case. The book glossed over the racial implications too.

Overall, this book was a ride, but I need time to process more of what happened.
