The depiction of Navajo culture and particularly how the Navajo see death was so interesting, and Rita was a complex and likable character. There are parts of the book that are hard to read, especially the scene in the judge’s house, but it’s necessary to understand what Rita’s job is really like. Definitely one of those where you should take the content warnings seriously, though. 4 stars because I didn’t like the way things wrapped up.

Very engaging book! As a photographer, I felt the premise of the crime scene photographer to be a very interesting one, and then the twist... I had a lot of fun with this book as an Indigenous person, I'm glad to have more representation. It was very well done with a few questions along the way, but nothing worth noting here. Pick it up, and read it.

I'm not in a good headspace to connect or continue with this book with this move looming over my head. Will try to come back to it

You know that cozy feeling when you watch an early 2000s crime drama? This book has that, but without all the oppressive patriarchy. TW: a baby dies a gruesome death, but you will see it coming and can skip that page.
